Who Invented Exams? It’s Time to Go Back in History A large part of our academic life is spent inside the examination hall, and this is especially true in a country like India. As students, we have dreaded, disliked, and even detested exams. Even before we gave a paper, we would think of all the possible excuses that we could give our parents to explain our poor showing in the results. Henry or Henry? All in all, as a student, we’ve had this odd and almost amusing relationship with exams, but we’ve never focused on the million dollar question: ‘Who’s the person behind these terrifyingly traumatic form of assessments?’ If we were to go by historical sources, then exams were invented by an American businessman and philanthropist known as Henry Fischel somewhere in the late 19th century. However, some sources attribute the invention of standardized assessments to another man by the same name, i.e. Henry Fischel. The latter one was a professor of religious studies at the Indiana Univ...

The History of WiFi: 1971 to Today The History of WiFi The history of WiFi is long and interesting.  In 1971,  ALOHAnet  connected the Hawaiian Islands with a UHF wireless packet network. ALOHAnet and the  ALOHA protocol  were early forerunners to  Ethernet , and later the  IEEE 802.11 protocols , respectively. Vic Hayes is often regarded as the “father of Wi-Fi.” He started such work in 1974 when he joined NCR Corp., now part of semiconductor components maker Agere Systems. A 1985 ruling by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission released the  ISM band  for unlicensed use – these are frequencies in the 2.4GHz band. These frequency bands are the same ones used by equipment such as microwave ovens and are subject to interference. In 1991,  NCR Corporation  with  AT&T Corporation  invented the precursor to 802.11, intended for use in cashier systems. The first wireless products were under the name  WaveLAN...

EVOLUTION OF VIDEO GAMES part 1 Bertie the Brain According to some,  the first video game ever created was Bertie the Brain  -  constructed in 1950  by an inventor named Josef Kates. This massive monstrosity of a machine, which measured four meters tall, played a familiar childhood game known as Tic-Tac-Toe and was displayed in the Canadian National Exhibition. For weeks, visitors to the Canadian National Exhibition were able to challenge the artificial intelligence of Bertie the Brain in varying levels of difficulty, much to their delight. For its time, Bertie was a marvel of technology - something no one has seen before. Sadly, this piece of our history was disassembled at the end of the exhibition, largely dismissed as no more than "novelty," even if a fantastical one. We are back to the definition of what is a video game - a definition that Bertie the Brain does not quite fully meet. William Higinbotham: The Man...

HISTORY OF T-SHIRT                                                          (THE UNKNOWN STORY) T-shirts were originally worn by veteran men as undergarment beneath their uniforms, but have since evolved to become a tool for branding and self-expression.  Here’s the history of t-shirts, and how they’ve evolved throughout the years. The Beginning of the T-shirt: The Earlier Years T-shirts were first introduced in United States sometime around the time of the Spanish World War. They were given to members of the U.S. Navy to be worn as undergarment beneath their uniforms.  Previously called a  union suit,  the first form of t-shirt was from New York.  A  union suit was a one-piece garment in white color with buttons in front. Nowadays, we’d probably...
